About Seedling Akebia

Seedling Akebia is a plant grown from seed we collected from our vines. It is a beautiful, fast growing vanilla scented vine with cascading pink or white flowers that thrives with little care and will have people asking about the strange-looking fruit! It is a beautiful evergreen in the Pacific Northwest and warmer areas, and deciduous in colder climates. The abundant April flowers are very fragrant and smell like vanilla. The vine produces bizarre looking five inch (occasionally much larger) long fruit. Inside is a tasty roll of white seedy pulp that is sweet and tastes like mango pudding. To get fruit, plant two or more varieties. Native to Northern Japan, the soft young shoots are used for salads or for salt pickling. Given something to climb on the twining vine can grow 20′ a year. It may be pruned severely each year if you wish to control its rapid growth. Or it can run along the ground, rooting where branches touch and become an attractive ground cover. Easily naturalizes and requires no maintenance. USDA Zones 3-10.

quart size potsA guide to choosing the right size

1 Quart = Available for immediate dispatch. Plants are between 3in-36in in height. They are like small plug plants with deep (5in) roots that will get established very quickly.

Bareroot = Field grown plants that have been freshly lifted and supplied with no soil around the roots. Only available during the dormant period November-April.

1 Gallon & larger = Container grown or bare root plants (planted in containers while dormant) and can be planted all year round. Nursery standard container size (also called #1). The size refers to the amount of soil that the container holds which is slightly less than 1 gallon. Please note that at the moment we do not ship gallon and larger plants.
